The Book of Mormon

Ether 13

I, Moroni, will now finish my record about the destruction of the people I have been writing about.

Ether’s Prophecies About the New Jerusalem

The people rejected everything Ether said. He told them about all things from the beginning of man. He told them how after the waters went down from this land, it became the best land of all lands. It was a land the Lord chose. So the Lord wanted all people who lived on it to serve him. It was the place of the New Jerusalem. The New Jerusalem would come down out of Heaven. It would be the Holy Sanctuary of the Lord.

Ether saw the days of Christ. He spoke about a New Jerusalem on this land. He also spoke about the house of Israel. He spoke about the Jerusalem that Lehi came from. After it was destroyed, it would be built up again as a holy city for the Lord. So it could not be a New Jerusalem because it had been there in the old days. But it would be built up again. It would become a holy city of the Lord. It would be built up for the house of Israel. A New Jerusalem would be built on this land for the children of Joseph’s family who were left. There has been a symbol of these things. Joseph brought his father down into the land of Egypt. His father died there. In the same way, the Lord brought some of Joseph’s children out of the land of Jerusalem. He wanted to be kind to Joseph’s children so they would not die. He was kind to Joseph’s father so he would not die. So Joseph’s family who are left will be built upon this land. It will be their land. They will build up a holy city for the Lord. It will be like the old Jerusalem. They will not be confused anymore until the end comes. Then the earth will pass away.

There will be a new heaven and a new earth. They will be like the old ones except the old ones have passed away. All things have become new. Then comes the New Jerusalem. God blesses those who live in it. Their clothes are white through the blood of the Lamb. They are counted among Joseph’s children who were left. They were from the house of Israel. Then also comes the old Jerusalem. God blesses the people who live there. They have been washed in the blood of the Lamb. They were scattered and gathered in from the four parts of the earth and from the north countries. They share in the promise that God made with their father Abraham. When these things come, they make the Scripture come true. It says: Those who were first will be last. Those who were last will be first.

Ether Is Rejected and Goes Into Hiding

I was about to write more. But I am not allowed. Ether’s prophecies were great and wonderful. But the people thought he was worth nothing. They threw him out. He hid in a cave during the day. At night he went out. He watched the things that would come upon the people. As he lived in the cave, he made the rest of this record. He watched the destructions that came upon the people by night.

War Breaks Out Across the Land

That same year he was thrown out from among the people, a great war started among the people. Many mighty men rose up. They tried to destroy Coriantumr by their secret plans of wickedness. We have spoken about these plans before. Coriantumr had learned everything about war. He knew all the tricks of the world. So he fought against those who tried to destroy him. But he did not turn away from his sins. His fair sons and daughters did not turn away from their sins. The fair sons and daughters of Cohor did not turn away from their sins. The fair sons and daughters of Corihor did not turn away from their sins. In fact, none of the fair sons and daughters on the whole earth turned away from their sins. So in the first year that Ether lived in the cave, many people were killed by the sword. Those secret groups fought against Coriantumr. They wanted to get the kingdom. The sons of Coriantumr fought hard. They bled a lot.

The Lord’s Warning to Coriantumr

In the second year, the word of the Lord came to Ether. He should go and prophesy to Coriantumr. If he would turn away from his sins and all his household would turn away from their sins, the Lord would give him his kingdom. The Lord would save the people. If not, they would be destroyed. All his household would be destroyed except for him. He would only live to see the prophecies come true. Those prophecies were about another people receiving the land. Coriantumr would receive a burial by them. Every person would be destroyed except for Coriantumr. Coriantumr did not turn away from his sins. His household did not turn away from their sins. The people did not turn away from their sins. The wars did not stop. They tried to kill Ether. But he ran away from them. He hid again in the cave.

Shared Captures Coriantumr

Shared rose up. He also fought Coriantumr. He beat him. In the third year he captured him. In the fourth year, the sons of Coriantumr beat Shared. They got the kingdom back for their father.

Total War Across the Land

A war started on all the land. Every man with his group fought for what he wanted. There were robbers. In fact, all kinds of wickedness were on all the land.

The Battle in the Valley of Gilgal

Coriantumr was really angry with Shared. He went against him with his armies to fight. They met in great anger. They met in the valley of Gilgal. The battle became really bad. Shared fought against him for three days. Coriantumr beat him. He chased him until he came to the plains of Heshlon. Shared fought him again on the plains. He beat Coriantumr. He drove him back again to the valley of Gilgal. Coriantumr fought Shared again in the valley of Gilgal. He beat Shared and killed him. Shared wounded Coriantumr in his thigh. He did not go to battle again for two years. During this time all the people on all the land were spilling blood. No one could stop them.
