Helaman 14

Samuel prophesies signs of Christ's birth: a day, night, and day without darkness, and a new star. He testifies Christ will redeem believers. Samuel prophesies signs of Christ's death: three days of darkness, earthquakes, cities destroyed, mountains leveled, and graves opened. These signs will remove all excuse for unbelief. People possess agency.

Samuel Tells More Prophecies

Samuel the Lamanite told the people many more things. They can’t be written here.

Signs When Jesus Is Born

He said to them: 'I give you a sign. In five more years, the Son of God will come. He will save all those who believe in his name.' 'I will give you a sign when he comes. There will be great lights in heaven. The night before he comes, there will be no darkness. It will look like day to everyone.' 'So there will be one day, then a night, then another day. It will be like one long day with no night. This will be your sign. You will see the sun rise. You will see it set. So you will know there are two days and a night. But the night will not be dark. This will be the night before he is born.' 'A new star will appear. You have never seen a star like it. This will also be a sign for you.'

'This is not all. There will be many signs and wonderful things in heaven.' 'You will all be amazed and wonder. You will fall to the ground.' 'Anyone who believes in the Son of God will have life forever.'

Why Samuel Came to Preach

'The Lord told me to tell you this through his angel. He told me to tell you these things. He said to me: Cry out to these people. Tell them to change and prepare the way for the Lord.' 'Because I am a Lamanite, you are angry with me. I have told you the words the Lord told me to say. These words were hard for you to hear. So you want to destroy me. You have thrown me out.'

'But you will hear my words. This is why I came up on this city wall. I want you to hear about God’s judgment. It’s coming to you because of your sins. I want you to know how to change.' 'I want you to know about Jesus Christ coming. He is the Son of God. He is the Father of heaven and earth. He made all things from the beginning. I want you to know the signs of his coming. Then you can believe in his name.' 'If you believe in his name, you will change from all your sins. Then your sins can be forgiven because of what he did.'

Signs When Jesus Dies

'I will give you another sign. This is a sign of his death.' 'He must die so people can be saved. It’s necessary for him to die. This brings about people rising from the dead. This way people can come back to the Lord.' 'His death makes it possible for people to rise from the dead. It saves all people from the first death. That spiritual death happened because of Adam’s sin. All people were cut off from the Lord. They are considered dead in both physical and spiritual ways.'

'But Christ rising from the dead saves all people. It brings them all back to the Lord.' 'It makes it possible for people to change. Anyone who changes won’t be cut down and thrown in the fire. But anyone who doesn’t change will be cut down and thrown in the fire. A spiritual death will come to them again. A second death. They are cut off again from what is right.' 'So change! Change! If you know these things but don’t do them, you will be judged. You will face this second death.'

The Earth Will Change

'As I said, here is another sign of his death. On the day he dies, the sun will get dark. It will not give you light. The moon and stars won’t give light either. There will be no light on this land. This will last three days. It will start when he dies. It will end when he rises from the dead.' 'When he dies, there will be thunder and lightning for many hours. The earth will shake and tremble. The rocks on this earth will break apart. You know the rocks are solid now. Most of them are one big solid piece. But they will break up.' 'They will split in two. After that, they will always have cracks and breaks in them. This will happen all over the earth. Both above ground and below ground.'

'There will be great storms. Many mountains will become flat like valleys. Many places that are valleys now will become very tall mountains.' 'Many roads will be broken up. Many cities will be destroyed.' 'Many graves will open up. Many dead people will come out. Many holy people will appear to many people.'

'The angel told me this. He said there would be thunder and lightning for many hours.' 'He said that while the thunder, lightning, and storm last, these things will happen. Darkness will cover the whole earth for three days.'

No Reason Not to Believe

'The angel said many people will see even greater things than these. This is so they will believe. They will believe these signs and wonderful things will happen all over this land. There should be no reason for anyone not to believe.' 'This is so anyone who wants to believe can be saved. Anyone who won’t believe will face fair judgment. If they are judged, they bring judgment on themselves.'

You Are Free to Choose

'Remember this, my brothers! Anyone who dies spiritually does it to himself. Anyone who does evil does it to himself. You are free. You can choose for yourselves. God has given you knowledge. He has made you free.' 'He has helped you know good from evil. He has given you the choice between life and death. You can do good. Then good will come back to you. Or you can do evil. Then evil will come back to you.'
