Alma 10

These are the words that Amulek spoke to the people in the land of Ammonihah:

Amulek Tells About Himself

I am Amulek. I am the son of Giddonah. He was the son of Ishmael. He was a descendant of Aminadi. Aminadi read the writing on the wall of the temple. God’s finger had written it. Aminadi was a descendant of Nephi. Nephi was the son of Lehi. Lehi came from Jerusalem. Lehi was a descendant of Manasseh. Manasseh was the son of Joseph. Joseph’s brothers sold him to people in Egypt.

I am known by many people. I have many relatives and friends. I have made a lot of money by working hard. But even with all this, I never knew much about the Lord’s ways. I didn’t know about his mysteries and amazing power. Wait, I was wrong. I have seen his mysteries and his amazing power. I’ve seen how he has kept this people alive. But I made my heart hard. God called me many times, but I wouldn’t listen. I knew about these things, but I didn’t want to know. So I kept rebelling against God. I sinned until the fourth day of the seventh month. This was in the tenth year of our judges.

An Angel Visits Amulek

I was traveling to see a close relative. Then an angel of the Lord appeared to me. He said: 'Amulek, go back to your house. You will feed a prophet of the Lord. He is a holy man. God has chosen him. He has fasted for many days because of the sins of this people. He is hungry. You will bring him into your house and feed him. He will bless you and your house. The Lord’s blessing will rest on you and your house.'

I obeyed the angel. I went back toward my house. As I was going there, I found the man the angel told me about. It was this same man who has been speaking to you about God.

The angel said to me: 'He is a holy man.' So I know he is a holy man because an angel of God said so. I also know that the things he has told you are true. As the Lord lives, he sent his angel to show me these things. This happened while Alma stayed at my house. He has blessed my house. He has blessed me, my wife, my children, my father, and my relatives. Yes, he has blessed all my family. The Lord’s blessing has rested on us just like he said.

The Lawyers Try to Trick Amulek

When Amulek spoke these words, the people were amazed. There was more than one person who told them about the bad things they had done. These witnesses also told them about things that would happen in the future. They spoke by the Spirit of prophecy. But some people wanted to question them. They used tricky plans to catch them in their words. They wanted to find proof against them. Then they could take them to the judges. The judges would judge them by the law. They might be killed or put in prison. It depended on what crime they could show or prove against them.

The men who wanted to destroy them were lawyers. The people hired or chose them to handle the law. They worked at trials when people were accused of crimes. They worked in front of the judges. These lawyers learned all the tricks of the people. This helped them be good at their job.

They began to question Amulek. They wanted to make him say something that went against his other words.

Amulek Warns the People

They didn’t know that Amulek could know their plans. But when they started to question him, he understood their thoughts. He said to them: 'You wicked and evil people! You lawyers and fakes! You are building the Devil’s plans. You are setting traps to catch God’s holy ones.' 'You are making plans to twist the ways of good people. You will bring God’s anger down on your heads. This will lead to the complete destruction of this people.' 'Mosiah was our last king. He had no one to give the kingdom to. So he made this people be led by their own voices. He said that if the time came when this people chose to do wrong, they would be ready for destruction. He was right.' 'The Lord judges your sins. He cries to this people through his angels: ‘Turn away from your sins! The Kingdom of Heaven is coming soon.’' 'He cries through his angels: ‘I will come down to my people. I will bring fairness and what is right.’'

'I tell you this. If it weren’t for the prayers of the good people in this land, you would be completely destroyed right now. It wouldn’t be by a flood like in Noah’s time. It would be by hunger, by disease, and by the sword.' 'The prayers of good people are keeping you safe. So if you force the good people out, the Lord won’t hold back. He will come out against you in his fierce anger. Then you will be hit by hunger, disease, and the sword. This will happen soon unless you turn from your sins.'

The People Get Angry

The people became even more angry with Amulek. They cried out: 'This man attacks our laws! Our laws are fair. He attacks our wise lawyers. We chose them.'

But Amulek reached out his hand. He cried even louder to them: 'You wicked and evil people! Why does Satan have such great control over your hearts? Why do you give yourselves to him? He has power over you. He blinds your eyes so you can’t understand the true meaning of what is said to you.' 'Have I spoken against your law? You don’t understand. You say I spoke against your law. But I haven’t. I spoke in favor of your law. But your law shows you’re guilty.' 'The destruction of this people is starting to be built by the wrong actions of your lawyers and judges.'

When Amulek spoke these words, the people cried out against him. They said: 'We know this man is a child of the Devil. He lied to us. He spoke against our law. But now he says he didn’t speak against it.' 'And he has attacked our lawyers and our judges.'

The lawyers decided to remember these things against him.

Zeezrom Steps Forward

There was a lawyer named Zeezrom. He was the first to accuse Amulek and Alma. He was one of the best lawyers. He had a lot of work to do among the people. These lawyers wanted to get money. They got paid for their work.
