And it came to pass that they began to question Amulek, that thereby they might make him cross his words, or contradict the words which he should speak.

They began to question Amulek. They wanted to make him say something that went against his other words.

So they started questioning Amulek, trying to trip him up—hoping to make him contradict himself.
