3 Nephi 19

News of Jesus spreads quickly, and many gather the next day. Nephi and eleven disciples organize the multitude into twelve groups. After teaching and praying, the disciples baptize each other. The Holy Ghost falls upon them like fire, angels minister to them, and Jesus appears. He commands all to pray, and prays three times himself.

Jesus Goes to Heaven

After Jesus went up into heaven, the crowd left. Everyone took their wife and children and went back to their own home.

Before it got dark, the news spread quickly among the people. They heard that the crowd had seen Jesus. They heard that he had helped them. They also heard that he would come back the next day to show himself to the crowd again. All night long the news spread about Jesus. Many people sent out the message. A very large number of people worked hard all night. They wanted to be at the place where Jesus would show himself to the crowd the next day.

The Twelve Disciples Teach the People

The next day the crowd gathered together. Nephi was there with his brother Timothy, whom he had raised from the dead. His son Jonas was there. Also Mathoni, Mathonihah, Kumen, Kumenonhi, Jeremiah, Shemnon, Jonas, Zedekiah, and Isaiah were there. These were the names of the disciples Jesus had chosen. They went out and stood in the middle of the crowd.

The crowd was so big that they divided into twelve groups. The twelve disciples taught the crowd. They told the crowd to kneel down on the ground and pray to the Father in the name of Jesus. The disciples also prayed to the Father in the name of Jesus. Then they stood up and helped the people. They taught the people the same words Jesus had said. They did not change anything from what Jesus had said. Then they knelt down again and prayed to the Father in the name of Jesus. They prayed for what they wanted most. They wanted the Holy Spirit to be given to them.

Nephi Baptizes the Disciples

After they prayed, they went down to the water. The crowd followed them. Nephi went down into the water and was baptized. He came up out of the water and started to baptize. He baptized all the people Jesus had chosen. When they were all baptized and came up out of the water, the Holy Spirit fell on them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and with fire. They were surrounded by what looked like fire. It came down from heaven. The crowd saw it and tells about it. Angels came down out of heaven and helped them.

Jesus Appears and Prays

While the angels were helping the disciples, Jesus came and stood in the middle of them. He helped them. He told the crowd to kneel down on the ground again. He also told his disciples to kneel down on the ground. When they had all knelt down, he told his disciples to pray. They started to pray. They prayed to Jesus, calling him their Lord and their God.

Jesus left them and went a little way off. He bowed down to the ground and said: 'Father, I thank you for giving the Holy Spirit to these people I have chosen. I chose them out of the world because they believe in me.' 'Father, I pray that you will give the Holy Spirit to all the people who will believe in their words.' 'Father, you have given them the Holy Spirit because they believe in me. You see that they believe in me because you hear them pray to me. They pray to me because I am with them.' 'Father, I pray for them. I also pray for all the people who will believe in their words. I pray that they will believe in me. I pray that I may be in them just as you, Father, are in me. Then we can all be one.'

After Jesus prayed to the Father, he came back to his disciples. They were still praying to him without stopping. They did not say many words. God had given them the words to pray. They were filled with wanting. Jesus blessed them while they prayed to him. His face smiled at them. The light of his face shined on them. They became as white as Jesus’ face. Their clothes also became as white as Jesus’ clothes. Nothing on earth could be as white as they were. Jesus said to them: 'Keep praying.' But they did not stop praying.

He turned from them again and went a little way off. He bowed down to the ground. He prayed again to the Father and said: 'Father, I thank you for making these people I have chosen pure because of their faith. I pray for them. I also pray for those who will believe in their words. I pray that they will be made pure in me through faith in their words, just as these people are made pure in me.' 'Father, I am not praying for the world. I am praying for the people you have given me out of the world because of their faith. I pray that they will be made pure in me. I pray that I may be in them just as you, Father, are in me. Then we can be one. Then I can be honored in them.'

When Jesus finished saying these words, he came back to his disciples. They were still praying to him without stopping. He smiled at them again. They were white, just like Jesus.

Jesus Prays Words Too Great to Write

He went a little way off again and prayed to the Father. No one can say the words he prayed. No one can write down the words he prayed. The crowd heard. They tell about it. Their hearts were open. They understood in their hearts the words he prayed. But the words he prayed were so great and wonderful that they cannot be written. They cannot be said by anyone.

When Jesus finished praying, he came back to the disciples. He said to them: 'I have never seen such great faith among all the Jews. I could not show them such great miracles because they did not believe.' 'I tell you the truth. None of them have seen things as great as you have seen. They have not heard things as great as you have heard.'
