The Book of Mormon

Ether 6

I, Moroni, will now give the record of Jared and his brother.

The Journey Begins

After the Lord prepared the stones that the brother of Jared had carried up the mountain, the brother of Jared came down. He put the stones into the boats. He put one stone in each end. The stones gave light to the boats. The Lord made the stones shine in the darkness. This gave light to the men, women, and children. They could cross the great waters without being in darkness.

They prepared all kinds of food. They would need it for their trip on the water. They also brought food for their sheep, cattle, and whatever animals or birds they carried with them. When they had done all these things, they got into their boats. They started out into the sea. They trusted the Lord their God to take care of them. The Lord God caused a strong wind to blow on the water toward the promised land. The wind pushed them across the waves of the sea. Many times the boats went deep under the sea. This happened because of the huge waves that crashed on them. It also happened because of the big storms caused by the strong wind. When they went deep under the water, no water could hurt them. Their boats were tight like a dish. They were also tight like Noah’s ark. When the water covered them, they prayed to the Lord. He brought them back up to the top of the water. The wind never stopped blowing toward the promised land while they were on the water. They were pushed forward by the wind. They sang songs of praise to the Lord. The brother of Jared sang praises to the Lord. He thanked and praised the Lord all day long. When night came, they did not stop praising the Lord. They were pushed forward. No sea monster could break their boats. No whale could damage them. They had light all the time, whether they were above the water or under it. They traveled on the water for 344 days.

Arriving in the Promised Land

They landed on the shore of the promised land. When they set their feet on the shore, they bowed down on the ground. They made themselves humble before the Lord. They cried tears of joy before the Lord. They did this because of all his kind mercies to them. They went out on the land and began to farm the earth.

Jared had four sons. Their names were Jacom, Gilgah, Mahah, and Orihah. The brother of Jared also had sons and daughters. The friends of Jared and his brother were about 22 people. They also had sons and daughters before they came to the promised land. They grew to be many people.

They were taught to walk humbly before the Lord. They were also taught from heaven. They began to spread out across the land. They had many children and farmed the earth. They became strong in the land.

Choosing a King

The brother of Jared grew old. He saw that he would soon die. So he said to Jared, “Let us gather our people together. We can count them. We can find out what they want us to do before we die.” So the people were gathered together. The brother of Jared had 22 sons and daughters. Jared had 12 sons and daughters. He had four sons. They counted their people. After they counted them, they asked what the people wanted them to do before they died.

The people wanted them to choose one of their sons to be a king over them. This made them sad. But the brother of Jared said to them, “This will lead to slavery.” But Jared said to his brother, “Let them have a king.” So he said to the people, “Choose a king from among our sons. Choose whoever you want.” They chose the oldest son of the brother of Jared. His name was Pagag. But he said no. He would not be their king. The people wanted his father to make him do it. But his father would not. He told them not to make anyone be their king. They chose all the brothers of Pagag. But they all said no. The sons of Jared also said no. All of them said no except for one. Orihah said yes. He was chosen to be king over the people.

He began to rule. The people began to do well. They became very rich. Jared died. His brother also died. Orihah walked humbly before the Lord. He remembered the great things the Lord had done for his father. He also taught his people about the great things the Lord had done for their fathers.
