The Book of Mormon

Mosiah 1:5

1830 Edition

I say unto you, my sons, were it not for these things, which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of his mysteries, and have his commandments always before our eyes, that even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief, and we should have been like unto our brethren, the Lamanites, which know nothing concerning these things, or even do not believe them when they are taught them, because of the traditions of their fathers, which are not correct.

I say unto you, my sons, were it not for these things, which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of his mysteries, and have his commandments always before our eyes, that even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief, and we should have been like unto our brethren, the Lamanites, whicho know nothing concerning these things, or even do not believe them when they are taught them, because of the traditions of their fathers, which are not correct.

Simple English

I tell you, my sons, if God had not kept and saved these things for us to read and understand his secrets and always see his commands, even our fathers would have stopped believing. We would be like our brothers, the Lamanites. They know nothing about these things. They don’t believe them when people teach them because their fathers taught them wrong things.

Paraphrase

“Listen, my sons—without these things that God has preserved so we could read and understand his mysteries and keep his commandments always before us, even our fathers would have drifted away from the truth. We would be just like our relatives, the Lamanites, who know nothing about these things. Even when someone tries to teach them, they won’t believe because of the false traditions they inherited from their fathers.
