The Book of Mormon

Jacob 4:13

1830 Edition

Behold, my brethren, he that prophesieth, let him prophesy to the understanding of men; for the spirit speaketh the truth, and lieth not. Wherefore, it speaketh of things as they really are, and of things as they really will be; wherefore, these things are manifested unto us plainly, for the salvation of our souls. But behold, we are not witnesses alone in these things; for God also spake them unto Prophets of old.

Changes

Behold, my brethren, he that prophesieth, let him prophesy to the understanding of men; for the sSpirit speaketh the truth, and lieth not. Wherefore, it speaketh of things as they really are, and of things as they really will be; wherefore, these things are manifested unto us plainly, for the salvation of our souls. But behold, we are not witnesses alone in these things; for God also spake them unto Pprophets of old.

Simple English

Brothers, if someone prophesies, let them speak clearly so people understand. The Spirit speaks the truth and doesn’t lie. It tells about things as they really are and will be. These things are shown to us plainly to save our souls. We aren’t the only witnesses. God also told the old prophets these things.

Paraphrase

Anyone who prophesies should make it understandable. The Spirit speaks truth and never lies. It tells things as they really are and as they really will be. These truths are made plain to us for the salvation of our souls. And we’re not the only witnesses—God spoke these same things to the prophets long ago.
