Alma 63

Shiblon Takes Charge of the Sacred Things

At the start of the 36th year of the judges ruling over the Nephites, Shiblon took the sacred things that Helaman got from Alma. He was a good man. He did what was right before God. He always tried to do good and keep the Lord’s commandments. His brother did the same. Moroni also died. That’s how the 36th year ended.

Many People Sail North

In the 37th year of the judges, a large group of men left the land of Zarahemla. There were 5,400 men with their wives and children. They went to the land in the north. Hagoth was very creative. He built a very large ship on the border of the land called Bountiful, by the land called Desolation. He put it in the West Sea, by the narrow neck that led to the land in the north. Many Nephites got on the ship. They sailed north with lots of supplies and many women and children. That’s how the 37th year ended.

In the 38th year, Hagoth built more ships. The first ship came back. Many more people got on it. They took lots of supplies and sailed north again. They were never heard from again. We think they drowned in the deep sea. Another ship also sailed away. We don’t know where it went. That year, many people went to the land in the north. That’s how the 38th year ended.

The Sacred Things Pass to Helaman

In the 39th year of the judges, Shiblon died. Corianton had gone north in a ship. He was bringing supplies to the people who went to that land. So Shiblon gave the sacred things to Helaman’s son before he died. The son’s name was also Helaman. He was named after his father.

All the writings that Helaman had were written down and sent out to all the people in the land. But some parts that Alma said not to share were kept back. These things were kept sacred and passed down from parents to children. So that year, they were given to Helaman before Shiblon died.

War with the Lamanites

That same year, some people left the Nephites and joined the Lamanites. They made the Lamanites angry at the Nephites again. That same year, the Lamanites came with a large army to fight the people of Moronihah and his army. The Lamanites were beaten and went back to their own lands. They lost many people. That’s how the 39th year of the judges over the Nephites ended. That’s the end of the story of Alma, his son Helaman, and his son Shiblon.
