And now it came to pass that Alma took Helam, he being one of the first, and went and stood forth in the water, and cried, saying, O Lord, pour out thy spirit upon thy servant, that he may do this work with holiness of heart.

Simple English

Then Alma took Helam, who was one of the first. He went and stood in the water. He cried out: “O Lord, pour out your Spirit on your servant. Help me do this work with a holy heart.”

Paraphrase

Alma took Helam, who was one of the first believers, and they walked into the water together. Alma cried out: “Lord, pour out your Spirit on your servant, so I can do this work with a pure heart.”
