Mosiah 1:16

And moreover, he also gave him charge concerning the records which were engraven on the plates of brass; and also, the plates of Nephi; and also, the sword of Laban, and the ball or director, which led our fathers through the wilderness, which was prepared by the hand of the Lord, that thereby they might be led, every one according to the heed and diligence which they gave unto him.

He also put him in charge of the records written on the brass plates, the plates of Nephi, the sword of Laban, and the ball that showed our fathers the way through the desert. The Lord made this ball to lead them if they paid attention and worked hard to follow him.

He also gave him charge of the brass plates, the plates of Nephi, the sword of Laban, and the Liahona—the compass that led our fathers through the wilderness. The Lord had prepared it to guide them, and it worked according to how much faith and attention they gave it.
