And it came to pass that many means were devised, to reclaim and restore the Lamanites, to the knowledge of the truth; but it all were vain: for they delighted in wars and bloodsheds; and they had an eternal hatred against us, their brethren. And they sough by the power of their arms to destroy us continually;

Simple English

The people tried many ways to bring the Lamanites back to the truth. But it didn’t work. The Lamanites loved war and killing. They hated us, their brothers, forever. They always tried to destroy us with their weapons.

Paraphrase

We tried everything we could think of to reach the Lamanites and bring them back to the truth. But nothing worked. They loved war and bloodshed. They hated us with an eternal hatred, even though we were their own relatives. They constantly tried to destroy us with military force.
