And it came to pass that they did have their signs, yea, their secret signs, and their secret words; and this that they might distinguish a brother who had entered into the covenant, that whatsoever wickedness his brother should do, he should not be injured by his brother, nor by those who did belong to his band, who had taken this covenant;

Simple English

They had secret signs and secret words. This way they could know who was in their group. If a member did something evil, his group members would not hurt him. The people in his group who had made this promise would not hurt him.

Paraphrase

They had special signs—secret signs and secret words—so they could recognize a fellow member. If your brother in the covenant did something wicked, you wouldn’t let anyone hurt him, and neither would anyone else in the gang who’d taken the oath.
