And the people began to plead with their Chief Judges and their leaders, that they would say unto Nephi, Behold, we know that thou art a man of God, and therefore cry unto the Lord our God, that he turn away from us this famine, lest all the words which thou hast spoken concerning our destruction, be fulfilled.

Simple English

The people begged their chief judges and leaders. They wanted them to say to Nephi: “We know you are a man of God. Please cry out to the Lord our God. Ask him to take away this hunger. If you don’t, everything you said about our destruction will come true.”

Paraphrase

The people begged their chief judges and leaders to go to Nephi and say, “We know you’re a man of God. Please cry out to the Lord our God to take away this famine, or everything you warned us about will come true.”
