and they were again obliged to return out of the wilderness, and out of the mountains, unto their own lands, because of the exceeding greatness of the numbers of those robbers which infested the mountains and the wilderness.—

They had to leave the wild places and mountains again. They had to go back to their own lands. There were just too many robbers in the mountains and wild places.

Paraphrase

They had to retreat from the wilderness and mountains back to their own lands. The robbers had grown so numerous in the mountains and wilderness that the armies couldn’t handle them.
