And it came to pass that they would not hearken unto his words; and there began to be contentions, insomuch that they were divided against themselves, and began to slay one another with the sword.

They would not listen to his words. They started fighting so much that they split into groups. They began killing each other with swords.

They refused to listen. Fighting broke out. They turned on each other and started killing one another with swords.
