Ether 9:34

And it came to pass that the people did follow the course of the beasts, and did devour the carcasses of them which fell by the way, until they had devoured them all. Now when the people saw that they must perish, they began to repent of their iniquities, and cry unto the Lord.

The people followed the animals. They ate the dead bodies of animals that died on the way until they had eaten them all. When the people saw that they would die, they started to turn from their sins and cry to the Lord.

The people followed the fleeing animals and ate the carcasses of those that died along the way. They kept this up until all the dead animals were gone. When they realized they were going to starve, they finally started repenting and crying out to the Lord.
