Behold my beloved brethren, seeing that I have been permitted to come unto you, therefore I attempt to address you in my language; yea, by my own mouth, seeing that it is the first time that I have spoken unto you by the words of my mouth, I having been wholly confined to the judgment seat, having had much business that I could not come unto you;

I, Alma, am happy I can come to you. I will speak to you in my own words. This is the first time I have spoken to you myself. I have been busy as chief judge and could not come before.

Paraphrase

My dear brothers and sisters, since I’ve been allowed to visit you, I want to speak to you personally. This is the first time I’ve addressed you directly, as I’ve been tied up with judicial duties and couldn’t get away to see you.
