The Book of Mormon

Alma 60:24

1830 Edition

And now except ye do repent of that which ye have done, and begin to be up and doing, and send forth food and men unto us, and also unto Helaman, that he may support those parts of our country which he hath retained, and that we may also recover the remainder of our possessions in these parts, behold it will be expedient that we contend no more with the Lamanites until we have first cleansed our inward vessel; yea, even the great head of our government;

Changes

And now, except ye do repent of that which ye have done, and begin to be up and doing, and send forth food and men unto us, and also unto Helaman, that he may support those parts of our country which he haths retgained, and that we may also recover the remainder of our possessions in these parts, behold it will be expedient that we contend no more with the Lamanites until we have first cleansed our inward vessel;, yea, even the great head of our government;.

Simple English

If you don’t turn away from what you have done, and start working, and send food and men to us and to Helaman, then we will do something. Helaman needs help to keep the parts of our country that he has held. We need to get back the rest of what we have lost. But first we need to clean our inside cup. That means the leaders of our government.

Paraphrase

So unless you repent of what you’ve done and start taking action—sending food and troops to us and to Helaman so he can hold the territory he’s kept and we can recover what we’ve lost—it’s pointless to keep fighting the Lamanites until we’ve cleansed ourselves from within. Starting with the head of our government.
