Now this was the case with all his Chief Captains. They doubted and marvelled also, because of the wickedness of the people; and this because of the success of the Lamanites over them.

All his top soldiers felt the same way. They were worried and surprised because the people were being wicked. They were worried because the Lamanites were winning.

His chief captains felt the same way. They were troubled and confused by how corrupt the people had become—and by how much ground the Lamanites were gaining.
