Alma 58:2

and they were so exceeding more numerous than was our army, that we durst not go forth and attack them in their strong holds.

They had many more soldiers than we did. So we did not dare go and attack them in their forts.

They outnumbered us so badly that we didn’t dare attack them head-on in their strongholds.
