Now we were desirous that the Lamanites should come upon us; for we were not desirous to make an attack upon them in their strong holds.

We wanted the Lamanites to come attack us. We didn’t want to attack them where they were strong.

“We actually wanted the Lamanites to come after us. We didn’t want to attack them in their fortified positions.”
