Alma 35:5

Now their rulers, and their priests, and their teachers, did not let the people know concerning their desires; therefore they found out privily the minds of all the people.

Their rulers, priests, and teachers did not tell the people what they wanted. So they secretly found out what all the people thought.

The rulers, priests, and teachers kept their own plans hidden. Instead, they quietly went around finding out what everyone thought.
