The Book of Mormon

2 Nephi 32:8

1830 Edition

And now my beloved brethren, I perceive that ye ponder still in your hearts; and it grieveth me that I must speak concerning this thing. For if ye would hearken unto the spirit which teacheth a man to pray, ye would know that ye must pray: for the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray.

Changes

And now, my beloved brethren, I perceive that ye ponder still in your hearts; and it grieveth me that I must speak concerning this thing. For if ye would hearken unto the sSpirit which teacheth a man to pray, ye would know that ye must pray:; for the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray.

Simple English

I know you are still wondering. It makes me sad that I must talk about this. If you would listen to the Spirit that teaches people to pray, you would know that you must pray. The evil spirit doesn’t teach people to pray. The evil spirit teaches them that they must not pray.

Paraphrase

My friends, I can tell you’re still puzzling over this. It breaks my heart that I even need to bring this up. If you would just listen to the Spirit—who teaches everyone to pray—you’d know that you must pray. The evil spirit doesn’t teach people to pray. He teaches them not to.
