The Book of Mormon

2 Nephi 2:11

1830 Edition

for it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my first born in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass; neither wickedness; neither holiness nor misery; neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body, it must neeeds remain as dead, having no life, neither death nor corruption, nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.

Changes

fFor it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my first born in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass;, neither wickedness;, neither holiness nor misery;, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body, it must neeeds remain as dead, having no life, neither death, nor corruption, nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.

Simple English

There must be opposites in everything. If not, my first son born in the desert, there could be no right. There could be no wrong. No good or bad. No happiness or sadness. Everything would be mixed together. If it was one body, it would be like being dead. There would be no life, no death, no happiness, no sadness, no feeling at all.

Paraphrase

There has to be opposition in everything. If there wasn’t, my firstborn in the wilderness, there could be no right or wrong, no holiness or misery, no good or bad. Everything would just blend together into one thing. If everything was one body, it would be dead—no life or death, no decay or preservation, no happiness or misery, no feeling or numbness.
