The Book of Mormon

1 Nephi 17:45

1830 Edition

Ye are swift to do iniquity, but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an angel, and he spake unto you; yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still, small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words; wherefore, he hath spoken unto you like unto the voice of thunder, which did cause the earth to shake as if it were to divide asunder.

Changes

Ye are swift to do iniquity, but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an angel, and he spake unto you; yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still, small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words; wherefore, he haths spoken unto you like unto the voice of thunder, which did cause the earth to shake as if it were to divide asunder.

Simple English

You are quick to do evil but slow to remember the Lord your God. You have seen an angel. He spoke to you. You have heard his voice many times. He has spoken to you in a still, small voice. But you couldn’t feel it because you were past feeling. So he had to speak to you like thunder that made the earth shake.

Paraphrase

“You’re quick to sin but slow to remember the Lord your God. You’ve seen an angel who spoke to you. You’ve heard his voice many times. He’s spoken to you in a gentle, quiet voice, but you were too numb to feel his words. So he had to speak like thunder, making the earth shake as if it would split apart.”
