Mosiah 28:12

and this he done, because of the great anxiety of his people, for they were desirous beyond measure, to know concerning those people which had been destroyed.

He did this because his people really wanted to know. They wanted to know about the people who had been destroyed.

He’d done this because his people were desperate to know about the destroyed civilization those plates described.
