And now, I say unto you, my brethren, that after ye have known and have been taught all these things, if ye should transgress, and go contrary to that which hath been spoken, that ye do withdraw yourselves from the Spirit of the Lord, that it may have no place in you to guide you in wisdom’s paths, that ye may be blessed, prospered, and preserved.

Simple English

'I tell you, my brothers, that after you have known and been taught all these things, if you sin and go against what has been spoken, you push away the Spirit of the Lord. Then it cannot help guide you in wise ways so you can be blessed, helped to do well, and kept safe.'

Paraphrase

'After knowing and being taught all this, if you turn away and go against what you’ve been told, you’re pushing away the Spirit of the Lord. You’re refusing to let him guide you in wisdom’s paths where you could be blessed, prosper, and be protected.'

2:36-39

The Book of Mormon teaches that death seals man's fate (see also Alma 34:32-35). Contrast with Doctrines and Covenants 88:99 which seems to hold out the hope that one's place in heaven can be changed after being in spirit prison.
