Mormon 8:36

1830 Edition

and I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts; and there are none, save a few only, which do not lift themselves up in the pride of their hearts, unto the wearing of very fine apparel, unto envying, and strifes, and malice, and persecutions, and all manner of iniquities; and your churches, yea, even every one, have become polluted because of the pride of your hearts.

aAnd I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts; and there are none, save a few only, whicho do not lift themselves up in the pride of their hearts, unto the wearing of very fine apparel, unto envying, and strifes, and malice, and persecutions, and all manner of iniquities; and your churches, yea, even every one, have become polluted because of the pride of your hearts.

Simple English

I know you are proud. Only a few of you are not proud. You wear fancy clothes. You are jealous. You fight. You are mean. You hurt others. You do all kinds of bad things. Your churches have all become dirty because you are proud.

Paraphrase

I know you walk around proud. Except for a few people, almost everyone is lifted up in pride—wearing expensive clothes, filled with envy, fighting, hatred, persecution, and every kind of sin. Your churches—every single one—have become corrupt because of pride.
