Jacob 7:14

~544–420 BC

1830 Edition

And I said unto him, What am I, that I should tempt God to shew unto thee a sign, in the thing which thou knowest to be true? Yet thou wilt deny it, because thou art of the Devil. Nevertheless, not my will be done; but if God shall smite thee, let that be a sign unto thee that he hath power, both in Heaven and in Earth; and also, that Christ shall come. And thy will, O Lord, be done, and not mine.

Changes

And I said unto him,: What am I, that I should tempt God to sheow unto thee a sign, in the thing which thou knowest to be true? Yet thou wilt deny it, because thou art of the Ddevil. Nevertheless, not my will be done; but if God shall smite thee, let that be a sign unto thee that he haths power, both in Hheaven and in Eearth; and also, that Christ shall come. And thy will, O Lord, be done, and not mine.

Simple English

I said to him: 'Why should I ask God to show you a sign? You know these things are true. But you still say they’re not true because you follow the Devil. But not my will be done. If God strikes you down, let that be a sign to you. It will show he has power in heaven and on earth. It will show that Christ will come. Your will be done, Lord, not mine.'

Paraphrase

I said, 'Who am I to test God by showing you a sign about something you already know is true? You’ll just deny it anyway because you belong to the devil. But I won’t demand anything—if God strikes you down, let that be your sign. It will prove he has power in heaven and on earth, and that Christ is coming. Let your will be done, Lord, not mine.'
