And the Lord of the vineyard caused that it should be digged about, and pruned, and nourished, saying unto his servant, It grieveth me that I should lose this tree; wherefore, that perhaps I might preserve the roots thereof that they perish not, that I might preserve them unto myself, I have done this thing.

Changes

And the Lord of the vineyard caused that it should be digged about, and pruned, and nourished, saying unto his servant,: It grieveth me that I should lose this tree; wherefore, that perhaps I might preserve the roots thereof that they perish not, that I might preserve them unto myself, I have done this thing.

Simple English

The Lord had them dig around it, trim it, and feed it. He told his servant: “I am sad that I might lose this tree. Maybe I can save the roots so they don’t die. I want to save them for myself. That’s why I did this.”

Paraphrase

Then the Lord had the tree dug around, pruned, and nourished. He told his servant, ‘It breaks my heart to lose this tree. I’ve done all this hoping to preserve the roots so they won’t die—to keep them for myself.’
