The Book of Mormon

Jacob 1:8

1830 Edition

—Wherefore, we would to God that we could persuade all men not to rebel against God, to provoke him to anger, but that all men would believe in Christ, and view his death, and suffer his cross, and bear the shame of the world; wherefore, I, Jacob, take it upon me to fulfil the commandment of my brother Nephi.

Changes

Wherefore, we would to God that we could persuade all men not to rebel against God, to provoke him to anger, but that all men would believe in Christ, and view his death, and suffer his cross, and bear the shame of the world; wherefore, I, Jacob, take it upon me to fulfil the commandment of my brother Nephi.

Simple English

We wish we could get all people not to rebel against God or make him angry. We want all people to believe in Christ. We want them to think about his death, carry his cross, and bear the world’s shame. So I will do what my brother Nephi asked me to do.

Paraphrase

We desperately wanted everyone to stop rebelling against God, to stop provoking his anger. We wanted them all to believe in Christ—to look at his death, bear his cross, and accept the world’s rejection. So I’m doing what Nephi asked me to do.
