Ether 9:30

And it came to pass that there began to be a great dearth upon the land, and the inhabitants began to be destroyed exceeding fast, because of the dearth: for there was no rain upon the face of the earth;

There was a great lack of food in the land. The people started to die very fast because there was no food. There was no rain on the earth.

A terrible drought hit the land. People began dying rapidly from the famine. No rain fell anywhere.
