Alma 62:41

But behold, because of the exceeding great length of the war between the Nephites and the Lamanites, many had become hardened, because of the exceeding great length of the war; and many were softened, because of their afflictions, insomuch that they did humble themselves before God, even in the depth of humility.

Because the war between the Nephites and the Lamanites had been very long, many people had become hard. But many people were softened because of their troubles. They humbled themselves before God with deep humility.

Because the war had dragged on so long, many had become hardened by it. But many others had been softened by their suffering, humbling themselves deeply before God.
