Alma 61:8

They have got possession of the land, or the city of Zarahemla; they have appointed a king over them, and he hath written unto the king of the Lamanites, in the which he hath joined an alliance with him; in the which alliance, he hath agreed to maintain the city of Zarahemla, in the which maintenance, he supposeth will enable the Lamanites to conquer the remainder of the land, and he shall be placed king over this people, when they shall be conquered under the Lamanites.

They took control of the city of Zarahemla. They chose a king to lead them. He wrote to the king of the Lamanites. He made a deal with him. In this deal, he agreed to let the Lamanites keep the city of Zarahemla. He thinks this will help the Lamanites win the rest of the land. Then the Lamanites will make him king over all the people when they are beaten.

“They’ve seized the city of Zarahemla and crowned a king. This king has made a deal with the Lamanite king. He promised to hand over Zarahemla, thinking this will help the Lamanites conquer the rest of our land—and then he expects to rule over us once we’re all under Lamanite control.”
