And when the Lamanites saw that they were marching towards the land of Zarahemla, they were exceeding fraid, lest there was a plan laid to lead them on to destruction; therefore they began to retreat into the wilderness again, yea, even back by the same way which they had came.

Simple English

When the Lamanites saw that we were going toward the land of Zarahemla, they got very scared. They thought we had a plan to destroy them. So they started going back into the wild lands. They went back the same way they had come.

Paraphrase

When the Lamanites realized we were heading toward Zarahemla, they panicked. They feared it was a trap to lead them to destruction, so they started retreating back the way they’d come.
