1830 Edition

And it came to pass that we did camp round about the city for many nights; but we did sleep upon our swords, and keep guards, that the Lamanites could not come upon us by night, and slay us, which they attempted many times; but as many times as they attempted this, their blood was spilt.

Changes

And it came to pass that we did camp round about the city for many nights; but we did sleep upon our swords, and keep guards, that the Lamanites could not come upon us by night, and slay us, which they attempted many times; but as many times as they attempted this, their blood was spilt.

Simple English

We camped around the city for many nights. But we slept with our swords ready. We kept guards so the Lamanites could not sneak up on us at night and kill us. They tried many times. But each time they tried, we killed them.

Paraphrase

We camped around the city for many nights, sleeping with our swords ready, guards posted everywhere. The Lamanites tried repeatedly to sneak in and kill us in the dark, but every time they tried, they left their dead behind.
