Now the Lamanites had taken many women and children; and there was not a woman nor a child among all the prisoners of Moroni, or the prisoners which Moroni had taken; therefore Moroni resolved upon a stratagem, to obtain as many prisoners of the Nephites from the Lamanites, as it were possible;

The Lamanites had taken many women and children. But Moroni had not captured any women or children. So Moroni made a plan to get as many Nephite prisoners back from the Lamanites as he could.

The Lamanites had captured many women and children. Moroni had only taken male soldiers prisoner. So he came up with a plan to get as many Nephite prisoners back as possible.
