and the remainder of those dissenters, rather than to be smote down to the earth by the sword, yielded to the standard of liberty, and were compelled to hoist the title of liberty upon their towers, and in their cities, and to take up arms in defence of their country.

The rest of the people who refused to fight gave up rather than be killed. They had to fly the flag of freedom on their towers and in their cities. They had to pick up weapons to defend their country.

The rest of the dissenters, rather than die by the sword, surrendered to the banner of liberty. They were forced to raise the title of liberty on their towers and in their cities, and to take up arms defending their country.
