Simple English
There were about fifty Nephites who were hurt. They had been hit by the Lamanites’ arrows through the entrance. But they were protected by their shields and their chest armor and their helmets. So their wounds were on their legs. Many of those wounds were very bad.
Paraphrase
About fifty Nephites were wounded—hit by arrows that came through the entrance. But their shields, breastplates, and helmets protected their vital areas. Most of the wounds were on their legs, and some were serious.
