and the work of death commenced, on both sides; but it was more dreadful on the part of the Lamanites; for their nakedness was exposed to the heavy blows of the Nephites, with their swords and their cimeters, which brought death almost at every stroke;

Fighting and death started on both sides. But it was worse for the Lamanites. They had no protection from the hard blows of the Nephites’ swords. Almost every strike brought death.

The killing began on both sides. But it was far worse for the Lamanites. Their exposed bodies took the full force of the Nephites’ swords and scimitars. Nearly every blow brought death.
