Alma 40:14

~73 BC

1830 Edition

Now this is the state of the souls of the wicked; yea, in darkness, and a state of awful, fearful looking for of the fiery indignation of the wrath of God upon them; thus they remain in this state, as well as the righteous in paradise, until the time of their resurrection.

Influences

Westminster Confession 32:1
The bodies of men after death return to dust and see corruption; but their souls, (which neither die nor sleep,) having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave them. The souls of the righteous, being then made perfect in holiness, are received into the highest heavens, where they behold the face of God in light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies; and the souls of the wicked are cast into hell, where they remain in torments and utter darkness, reserved to the judgment of the great day. Besides these two places for souls separated from their bodies, the scripture acknowledgeth none.
Hebrews 10:27 (KJV)
But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
Ephesians 5:6 (KJV)
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Changes

Now this is the state of the souls of the wicked;, yea, in darkness, and a state of awful, fearful looking for of the fiery indignation of the wrath of God upon them; thus they remain in this state, as well as the righteous in paradise, until the time of their resurrection.

Simple English

This is what happens to bad people. They are in darkness. They are in a place of fear. They are scared and waiting for God to punish them with fire because he is angry. They stay in this place until they come back to life. Good people stay in paradise until they come back to life.

Paraphrase

This is the state of the wicked—in darkness, in a state of awful dread, waiting for the fiery rage of God’s judgment to fall on them. They stay in this state just as the righteous stay in paradise, until the time of their resurrection.
