1830 Edition

And they came unto Alma; and the one which was the most foremost among them, saith unto him, Behold, what shall these my brethren do, for they are despised of all men, because of their poverty; yea, and more especially by our priests; for they have cast us out of our synagogues, which we have labored abundantly to build, with our own hands; and they have cast us out because of this our exceeding poverty, that we have no place to worship our God; and behold, what shall we do?

They came to Alma. The one in front said to him: What should my brothers do? Everyone hates them because they are poor. The priests hate them most of all. They have kicked us out of our churches. We worked so hard to build those churches with our own hands. They kicked us out because we are so poor. We have no place to worship our God. What should we do?

Paraphrase

One man stepped forward and spoke for the group: “What should my brothers do? Everyone despises them because they’re poor—especially the priests. They’ve kicked us out of the synagogues we worked so hard to build with our own hands. They threw us out because we’re too poor, and now we have nowhere to worship God. What are we supposed to do?”
