1830 Edition
And they did look upon shedding the blood of their brethren with the greatest abhorrence; and they never could be prevailed upon to take up arms against their brethren; and they never did look upon death with any degree of terror for their hope and views of Christ and the resurrection; therefore death was swallowed up to them by the victory of Christ over it;

Simple English
They hated the idea of killing their relatives. No one could ever make them pick up weapons against their relatives. They were never afraid to die. They had hope in Christ and in coming back to life after death. So death did not have power over them because of Christ’s win over it.
Paraphrase
They hated the thought of killing anyone. No one could ever convince them to take up weapons against other people. And they had no fear of death at all—their hope and confidence in Christ and the resurrection made death powerless. Christ’s victory had swallowed up death completely.
