Alma 16:17

that they might not be hardened against the word, that they might not be unbelieving, and go on to destruction, but that they might recieve the word with joy, and as a branch be grafted into the true vine, that they might enter into the rest of the Lord their God.

He wanted their hearts not to be hard against the word. He did not want them to refuse to believe and be destroyed. Instead he wanted them to receive the word with joy. He wanted them to be like a branch attached to the true vine. Then they could enter into the rest of the Lord their God.

He didn’t want them to become hardened against the truth or fall into unbelief and destruction. He wanted them to receive the word with joy, to be grafted like a branch into the true vine, so they could enter into the Lord their God’s rest.
