And it came to pass that there was thick darkness upon the face of all the land, insomuch that the inhabitants thereof which had not fallen, could feel the vapour of darkness;

Simple English

Thick darkness covered the whole land. The people who were still alive could feel the darkness around them.

Paraphrase

Thick darkness blanketed everything. The survivors could feel the vapor of darkness pressing against them.
