for verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention, is not of me, but is of the Devil, which is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.

Simple English

I tell you the truth. Anyone who has the spirit of fighting is not from me. They are from the Devil. He is the father of fighting. He makes people fight with each other in anger.

Paraphrase

“Anyone who has a spirit of contention doesn’t belong to me—they belong to the devil. He’s the father of contention. He’s the one who stirs people up to fight with each other in anger.”
