2 Nephi 30:1

~559–545 BC

1830 Edition

And now, behold, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto you: for I, Nephi, would not suffer that ye should suppose that ye are more righteous than the Gentiles shall be. For behold, except ye shall keep the commandments of God, ye shall all likewise perish; and because of the words which have been spoken, ye need not suppose that the Gentiles are utterly destroyed.

Influences

Mark 11:16 (KJV)
And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
Luke 13:3 (KJV)
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Changes

And now, behold, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto you:; for I, Nephi, would not suffer that ye should suppose that ye are more righteous than the Gentiles shall be. For behold, except ye shall keep the commandments of God, ye shall all likewise perish; and because of the words which have been spoken, ye need not suppose that the Gentiles are utterly destroyed.

Simple English

I, Nephi, want to speak to you, my dear brothers. Don’t think you are better than the people who aren’t Jews. If you don’t obey God’s commandments, you will all die just like they will. And because of the words I have spoken, you should not think that these other people will be completely destroyed.

Paraphrase

Listen, my friends: I need to tell you something. Don’t think you’re more righteous than the Gentiles will be. If you don’t keep God’s commandments, you’ll fall just like they will. And don’t assume the Gentiles will be wiped out forever.
