The Book of Mormon

2 Nephi 19:17

1830 Edition

Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one of them is a hypocrite and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand stretched out still.

Influences

Isaiah 9:17 (KJV)
Therefore the LORD shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Changes

Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows:; for every one of them is a hypocrite and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Simple English

So the Lord will not be happy with their young men. He will not feel sorry for children without fathers or for widows. Every one of them is a fake and does bad things. Every mouth speaks foolish words. But even after all this, God is still angry. His hand is still raised to punish them.

Paraphrase

So the Lord won’t celebrate their young men or show mercy to their orphans and widows. Every one of them is godless and wicked. Every mouth speaks foolishness. Even after all this, God’s anger hasn’t cooled. His hand is still raised to strike.
