1830 Edition

Wherefore, as I said unto you, it must needs be expedient that Christ, (for in the last night the Angel spake unto me that this should be his name,) should come among the Jews, among they which are the more wicked part of the world; and they shall crucify him: For thus it behooveth our God; and there is none other nation on earth that would crucify their God.

Wherefore, as I said unto you, it must needs be expedient that Christ, (for in the last night the Aangel spake unto me that this should be his name,) should come among the Jews, among thosey whicho are the more wicked part of the world; and they shall crucify him: F—for thus it behooveth our God;, and there is none other nation on earth that would crucify their God.

Simple English

So I told you that Christ must come to the Jews. An angel told me last night that Christ would be his name. He will come to the most evil people in the world. They will kill him on a cross. This is what our God needs to do. No other nation on earth would kill their God on a cross.

Paraphrase

So, like I said, Christ—an angel told me last night that would be his name—must come to the Jews, the most wicked part of the world. They will crucify him. This is how it must be for our God. No other nation on earth would crucify their own God.

Notes

10:3

The current editions of 1 Nephi 12:8 states, "... even the word of the justice of the Eternal God, and the Messiah who is the Lamb of God..."

However, the 1830 edition read, "And a great and a terrible gulf divideth them; yea, even the word of the justice of the Eternal God, and Jesus Christ, which is the Lamb of God..." (Book of Mormon, 1830 edition, page 28).

This means that according to the first edition, In fact, the name Jesus Christ was known not only prior to Lehi’s death, but was also used by Nephi himself before his journey to the New World.

"Since the Book of Mormon later states that the name was first made known to Jacob years after Lehi's death (2 Nephi 10:1-3), in the second edition Joseph Smith changed the words Jesus Christ to the Messiah. It must be born in mind that the change could not represent a better translation as Smith did not claim to have access to the plates at that time....The printer's manuscript of the Book of Mormon was also altered to reflect this serious change. The words Jesus Christ, which have been struck out, and the words Mosiah who have been written in above the line. It is obvious, of course, the correct words should be Messiah...it is obvious that a deliberate change was made..." -Jerald and Sandra Tanner, Joseph Smith's Plagiarism of the Bible in the Book of Mormon, p. 216.
